The values to aim for
Prepare your files at the final size (1:1 scale), images included. Depending on the product:
- 300 dpi for most printed products: flyers, cards, folded leaflets, brochures, small-format posters.
- 200 dpi for large posters viewed at close range.
- 150 dpi for large format seen from a distance: banners, roll-ups, flags, signs.
- 1200 dpi for fine line work and very small outlined text.
Why DPI matters so much
A digital image contains a fixed number of dots. Enlarge it beyond its native size and those dots stretch: edges turn jagged and blurry. The greater the viewing distance (a banner on a building façade), the lower you can go in resolution without the eye noticing.
Check it yourself
Open your PDF and zoom to 400%. Inspect every image and every logo: if anything looks blurry or stair-stepped, its resolution is too low. Re-import the element in high resolution rather than enlarging it in the layout.
Check before you send
- File created at final size, 1:1
- Images at 300 dpi (200 posters, 150 large format)
- Nothing enlarged beyond its native size
- Visual check at 400% zoom in the PDF
