Folding and perforation

Folds and perforations call for a few layout precautions: margins at the fold, fold direction and clear guides for production.

Margins at the fold

Keep text and important elements away from fold lines (at least 4 to 5 mm). A fold running through text makes it hard to read, and artwork sitting across a fold can shift slightly.

Fold types

Half fold, roll fold, concertina (zig-zag) fold, gate fold: each one has its own panel logic, and panels that fold inwards are usually slightly narrower. Use the template for your chosen fold to size each panel correctly.

Marking up the finishing

Place fold and perforation lines on a dedicated guide layer, or describe them clearly — never print them in the final artwork. Don’t draw the perforation dots yourself in the print file.

Check before you send

  • Content kept 4–5 mm away from folds
  • Panels sized to the fold template
  • Folds/perforations marked outside the printed artwork
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to draw the fold lines?
No: put them on a guide layer or simply specify the fold. The lines must not appear on the finished print.
