Cut contour: custom die-cut shapes

For shape cutting (stickers, labels, POS displays), supply a vector cut path, separate from the artwork, for the cutter to follow.

A vector path in a spot colour

Build the cut contour as a vector curve, in an explicitly named spot colour (for example “CutContour”), set to overprint so it doesn’t knock out the artwork. Place it on its own dedicated layer.

Bleed beyond the cut line

Extend the background slightly beyond the cut contour (just like a bleed) to avoid a white edge around the shape if the cut shifts.

Keep shapes simple

Avoid very fine points and overly sharp angles — they are fragile both to cut and to peel. Round the corners slightly whenever you can.

Check before you send

  • Vector cut path on its own layer
  • Cut colour set as a spot colour + overprint
  • Background extended beyond the path
  • No fragile corners
Frequently asked questions
Can I just use a black line as the cut path?
No: a CMYK line would simply be printed. The cut path must be a named spot colour, set to overprint, on a separate layer.
