Fonts: embed or outline

If a font isn’t supplied inside the file, it can be swapped for another at print time. Two safe solutions: embedding or outlining.

Embed or outline

When exporting your PDF, embed the fonts (fully or as subsets). The other option, especially for logos, is to convert the text to outlines (vector paths). The text then becomes a shape, independent of any installed font.

Legibility

Avoid very small point sizes, especially in colour or reversed out of a dark background. Fine text built from several inks can look slightly blurred; set it in a single colour (100% K for black).

Check before you send

  • Fonts embedded or text outlined
  • Small text set in a single colour
  • Point size large enough to stay legible
Frequently asked questions
Outline or embed — which should I choose?
Both work. Outlining is the safest for logos; embedding keeps the text editable for longer.
