QR codes and barcodes

A QR code or barcode must be sharp, high-contrast and large enough to be read by every phone and scanner.

Size and contrast

Make your QR code at least 15 mm square — and larger if it will be scanned from a distance. Use a dark code (100% K) on a light background: avoid light codes on dark backgrounds or low-contrast pairings, which are often unreadable.

The quiet zone

Leave an empty margin all the way around the code (the quiet zone). Keep text and decoration out of it: anything placed too close stops the code from being read.

Code quality

Place the code as a vector or in high resolution. A pixelated or blurry code will not scan. Always test it before printing.

Check before you send

  • QR code ≥ 15 mm, larger if viewed from afar
  • Dark code on a light background, strong contrast
  • Quiet zone respected
  • Vector/HD code, scan-tested
Frequently asked questions
Can I colour my QR code in my brand colours?
With care: keep a strong contrast between the code and its background, and test the scan. Shades that are too light break readability.
