File formats for printing

Not all formats are equal when it comes to print. PDF remains the safest choice; TIFF and high-quality JPEG work too, with a few precautions.

PDF, the recommended format

PDF (ideally PDF/X-4) preserves layout, fonts, vectors and colour. It is the most reliable format, especially for multi-page documents such as brochures and catalogues.

TIFF and JPEG

TIFF is a lossless image format, well suited to purely photographic artwork. JPEG is accepted at high quality, but its compression can create artefacts: export at maximum quality, in CMYK if possible, at 300 dpi.

Check before you send

  • PDF/X-4 by preference
  • TIFF for lossless photographic artwork
  • JPEG at maximum quality, 300 dpi
  • CMYK wherever possible
